The Henry Project’s Nourishing Connections program hosted a special Master Cookie Making Class at Habilitation Lviv, bringing together children from Safe Place UA and pastry chef Nazar Dumych. More than just a baking lesson, this event was an opportunity to foster resilience, joy, and emotional well-being for children affected by war.
The Power of Baking in Times of Crisis
For children who have experienced displacement, uncertainty, and trauma, creative and hands-on activities like baking can offer a sense of stability and comfort. Guided by Chef Nazar, the children eagerly rolled out dough, shaped cookies, and decorated them with bright icing and sprinkles. In this simple yet engaging process, they found a moment of joy and normalcy, allowing them to step away from their daily stresses and immerse themselves in a positive, shared experience.
The act of baking has been widely recognized for its therapeutic benefits, particularly in promoting mental well-being. It encourages focus and mindfulness, helping participants stay in the present moment. The sensory aspects—kneading the dough, smelling the fresh cookies, and tasting their sweet creations—stimulate relaxation and emotional regulation, which are especially important for children who have faced hardship.

A Safe Space for Connection and Support
This event took place at Habilitation Lviv, a rehabilitation center that provides crucial support for individuals recovering from injuries and trauma. The children who participated were from Safe Place UA, a Lviv-based initiative that provides a haven for displaced families, offering psychosocial support and community programs that help them rebuild their lives.
By bringing these children together in a warm, welcoming environment, the Master Cookie Making Class was more than just a fun afternoon—it was a step toward healing through connection. The children engaged with their peers, shared laughter, and built *a sense of belonging, which is essential for emotional recovery.

The Nourishing Connections program is based on the belief that food is a universal language—a tool for healing, resilience, and reconnection. By incorporating hands-on cooking and baking experiences, we aim to create safe, supportive spaces where participants can express themselves, develop skills, and regain confidence.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Chef Nazar Dumych, Habilitation Lviv, and Safe Place UA for their support in making this event possible. Their commitment to providing care and opportunities for those affected by war aligns with our mission to transform challenges into moments of connection, growth, and healing—one shared meal at a time.
