Supporting Women on the Frontlines in Kharkiv

We’re deeply grateful to our partners at Spirit of Ukraine Foundation for providing boxes of Plan B emergency contraception and UTI test kits, which have now been delivered to the frontline city of Kharkiv. This isn’t just a shipment of medical supplies—it’s a lifeline for women living in one of the most heavily impacted areas of Ukraine.

Kharkiv continues to endure constant shelling, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing instability, making access to healthcare incredibly difficult. Clinics are often overwhelmed, destroyed, or inaccessible, and pharmacies can be closed or understocked. For many women living near the frontlines, basic reproductive healthcare is no longer guaranteed. Under these conditions, even the simplest medical supplies become critically important.

Emergency contraception like Plan B is often misunderstood as a convenience, but in conflict zones, it becomes essential. Women in frontline areas face increased risks, including sexual violence, exploitation, and the challenges that come with displacement and instability. Many no longer have consistent access to regular birth control or medical consultations. In these moments, Plan B provides something incredibly important: the ability to choose in situations where so much control has been taken away.

Frontline medics are often the first—and sometimes only—point of care for civilians in active conflict zones. While their kits are typically stocked with trauma supplies like tourniquets and bandages, reproductive health support is just as critical. Having Plan B and UTI test kits directly available allows medics to respond quickly to time-sensitive needs, provide discreet and compassionate care, and prevent complications that could otherwise become serious.

A urinary tract infection, if left untreated, can escalate quickly into a much more serious condition, especially in an environment where hospital access is limited. With simple test kits, infections can be identified early and treated before they become dangerous. These are small tools, but they have a significant impact on health outcomes.

These supplies go beyond physical health—they help restore dignity, safety, and choice. For women who have lost homes, stability, and access to routine care, these interventions provide a sense of control and support in extremely difficult circumstances.

At The Henry Project, we believe humanitarian aid must go beyond food and shelter. It must include the essential healthcare items that protect long-term well-being and personal autonomy. Together with Spirit of Ukraine Foundation and our local partners, we remain committed to reaching women where the need is greatest, especially in places like Kharkiv, where access to care can no longer be taken for granted. Because even in war, every woman deserves access to healthcare, dignity, and the right to make decisions about her own body.
